Do you recognize these symptoms in your horse?


ULCER SYMPTOMS

These are common to both colonic (HINDGUT) and gastric (FOREGUT) ulcers.

  • weight loss and/or general decline in body condition

  • resistance under saddle

  • irritability

  • sensitivity to leg pressure

  • girthiness

  • lack of energy and stamina

  • loss of appetite

  • behaviour indicating discomfort, such as pawing or laying down excessively

  • low-grade anemia

  • unexplained or unrelieved pain.

FOREGUT DISORDERS

  • irritability and grouchiness

  • wood chewing, air sucking, cribbing

  • bruxism

  • adverse reaction to drinking cold water

HINDGUT DISORDERS

  • tenderness in the belly

  • girthiness

  • sensitivity along the flanks

  • tucked up appearance or hay belly

  • diarrhea

  • fecal pH 6.5 or less

  • difficulty bending or collecting

  • abdominal distention
